Confusing physics problem! What is the height of a moving elevator?
Here's the problem: A ray coming from beneath a lift moving at a brisk 7m/s.The reaches the bottom of the elevator shaft in 2.9s. (a) How high was the elevator when the bolt is loosened, (b) What is the speed of light when it hits the bottom of the well? I am totally lost and not know how to solve this problem.
This is a simple projectile problem. Ignore of the elevator. The question is about an object that has an initial speed of 7 m / s, and falls down by gravity. You do not indicate if it is moving up or down at the moment, which will make a big difference in response. The problem is solved very simply by applying the equations of motion of falling by gravity: h = V + 1/2gt v ² = V + H GT is the distance of fall (or the height reached, depending on the sign) v is the speed (to obtain the right to sign!) Is the initial velocity V g is the acceleration due to gravity t is time a) This part is trivially easy, because we have v, g, t, so just plug to get h. Take the position initial time zero, and make sure you have the right of signs depending on whether the initial velocity is above or below. b) Once again trivial. We know V and T, so that connecting to enter c. If you have the height, which found in part one, you can also resolve this energy conservation, taking of the initial kinetic and potential energy and calculate the final potential and kinetic energy. It is the easiest way in this case, but could be a check valuable in its outcome.
